HEPMA
Hospital Electronic Prescribing and Medicine Administration
Our Vision
To optimise the safe and effect use of medicines in hospitals across the NoS through collaboration and networking to achieve full implementation of a Regional HEPMA system.
Background
This programme will provide a single digital solution for prescribing and managing medicines within hospital environments for the North of Scotland region. A joint implementation across multiple health boards was considered to be the most desirable approach for deploying HEPMA. The North of Scotland region includes the following boards:
What is HEPMA?
HEPMA is the exciting new system that will replace current paper prescribing and medication administration systems within North of Scotland hospitals.
The CMM(formerly WellSky) HEPMA software is a web-based application, meaning it will be accessible to medical professionals from any device (PC, laptop, tablet) which is connected to the secure NHS network.
Why is HEPMA being implemented?
Improvement in patient safety is the key driver for the HEPMA implementation. The HEPMA system will provide a range of significant clinical, safety, informatics and management benefits to the region. These would not otherwise be achievable using our current systems of support and control for prescribing in the hospitals across the region.
What are the benefits of HEPMA?
The HEPMA solution will provide benefits to patients and staff, such that patients receive the best level of care possible.
The specific benefits of HEPMA that contribute to improved patient safety include:
- Reduction in errors in prescribing and medicines management through increased legibility and accuracy
- Increased clinical decision support, for example allergy and interaction checking
- Reduction in prescribing transcription
- Remote access to patients' prescription and medicines administration records
- Improved medicines reporting.
