What is Rape and Sexual Assault?
The legal definition of rape is when a person intentionally penetrates another's vagina, anus or mouth with a penis, without the other person's consent. Assault by penetration is when a person penetrates another person's vagina or anus with any part of the body other than a penis, or by using an object, without the person's consent.
The definition of sexual (or indecent) assault is physical, psychological or emotional violation in the form of a sexual act, inflicted on someone without their consent. This includes forcing or manipulating someone to witness or participate in sexual acts.
What is consent?
Consent is both people agreeing to what's happening by choice, and having the freedom and ability to make that choice
What should I do if I have been raped or sexually assaulted?
If you have been raped or sexually assaulted and you want to report this, you should contact the Police. Further information about the process of reporting a Rape or Sexual Assault to the police can be found here:
If you do not wish to report the attack, we would encourage you to seek medical advice for any injuries you may have sustained.
If there is a possibility of pregnancy you may want to take the morning after pill (up to 72 hours after) or have a coil fitted (up to 5 days after). To do this, please contact your Family Planning Clinic or GP.
